Naturally Controlling Your Acne
When treating any health issue, you have to remember that once you have decided to take action and start the treatment process, the body needs time to heal. Caring for the skin is no different. Often when you start implementing healthy lifestyle changes, and new treatment focused skin care routine, there is a process of detoxing impurities from the skin. During this phase, your skin may appear to get worse. But don't panic, this is only a short-term. Stick with your healthy lifestyle improvements and your holistic skin care plan and trust that your body will heal itself.
You Are What You Absorb
We've all heard the saying "you are what you eat", but after having a lengthy discussion with Barbara, it's more about "you are what you absorb". In some cases, you may be eating a super healthy diet that looks like a rainbow of fresh produce, but if you have poor absorption all that goodness and nutrients, that your skin will love, isn't going to get through. Gut health is super essential for so many aspects of your health, including your skin. Another great practice to start your day is to enjoy a cup of warm water and juice from half a lemon before breakfast. It helps to detox and alkalise your system which may make a massive improvement to naturally controlling acne.
Bone Broth Recipe
To improve gut health, Barbara recommends having a bone broth which is great for healing your gut, reduces joint pain and inflammation and promotes healthy hair and nail growth, amongst many other benefits.
Ingredients
1.8 kg beef bones 12 cups water medium onion roughly diced 1 ½ cups chopped carrots 1 ½ cup chopped leeks 3 bay leaves 3-4 sprigs fresh rosemary 6 cloves of garlic, and ginger 1 tsp black peppercorns (or cayenne pepper to taste)
Method
Preheat oven to 450 °F / 232c and line a baking sheet with foil. Place the bones on the baking sheet and roast for 40 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Once the bones are cooked, place the bones in a large saucepan or slow cooker and cover with water. Add the vinegar and allow to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
Add the chopped vegetables to the pot/ slow cooker. Bring to a rolling boil and then lower to a simmer.
For the first 2-3 hours, skim any foamy layer that develops on the top and discard. Simmer for 48 hour
Allow to cool slightly and strain. Transfer the broth to an airtight container and refrigerate for 4-6 hours or overnight. This will allow the fat to rise to the top and solidify. Scrape the fat off the head with a spoon.
Store in an airtight jar or freeze until ready to use.
Server warm. Warming the broth through will bring it back to a liquid consistency. For a little extra in your cup of broth add fresh herbs or tofu.
