Help! Summer's coming! #2 - How to keep your skin healthy this summer
Is it really that important to worry about protecting my skin when the weather isn't sunny yet? And when the weather does heat up is it ok to skip moisturizing my face so that I don't end up with oily, greasy skin? As we start to head into the warmer weather of summer our lifestyles get a little simpler: less clothing layers, lighter meals and a more efficient approach to our beauty routines as we aim to spend less time in the bathroom and more time enjoying the sunshine. However, when simplifying your lifestyle this summer there are a few key areas that shouldn't be skimped on, including two crucial skincare habits that should be kept year round:1. Protecting your skin
I'm sure you've been told it before, the sun can still damage your skin on a cloudy day€¦and boy is it most certainly true! Just because you are not feeling the full scorching heat of the sun bearing down on you, does not mean that your skin isn't susceptible to the effects of UV rays. In fact, failure to protect your skin can lead to burning, pigmentation, age spots, damaged skin, premature ageing and worst of all skin cancer! Beyond the threat of the sun's rays, it's also imperative that you provide your skin protection from other environmental stressors, including wind, pollution and cooling/heating. Without adequate protection these stressors can dehydrate your skin leading to susceptibility to sensitivities and premature ageing. I don't know about you, but that's something I certainly want to avoid!2. Hydrating your skin
I totally agree, having shiny, oily, greasy looking skin sucks and it is definitely something we all try to avoid in the summer months. However, failing to provide adequate moisture to your skin could be doing you more harm than good! Our skin has an optimum moisture level and the extra production of sebum that we experience in summer reflects the skin's natural replenishment process when it is exposed to drying elements (sun, wind, air-conditioning, salt water/chlorine). So if you want to avoid the typical summer oil slick, why not help your skin out? Applying an appropriate moisturiser will help keep your skin's ph & hydration levels in balance, as well as restoring essential nutrients for skin health, therefore reducing the need for it produce excess sebum.
