Treatment options for psoriasis will be covered in this post as we discussed the many different types of psoriasis in our last post. There are also many ways that it can be treated, including prescription and over the counter medication. However, some people find they experience unwanted side effects and prefer to try natural remedies such as vitamins, natural plant-based products and changes in their lifestyle to help treat their condition.
Today we are going to focus on the natural alternatives that you may find supportive. However, before trying natural alternatives please consult with your doctor or medical practitioner. Even though our recommendations are natural, some herbal or natural treatments may still have contraindications with medications. Also, you should also seek advice from your medical practitioner if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, or mood disorders. It's always best to be safe. If you are interested in finding out about prescription treatment options you should speak to your GP or medical professional.
pH Balance
We've spoken many times in our blog posts about the importance of using pH balanced products. Just to recap, the skin has a protective layer called the acid mantle and it has a pH of 5.5, slightly acidic, compared to our internal body which should be 7.35 - 7.45, 7 is neutral. The acid mantle's role is to keep moisture and lipids in and keep the bad guys such as germs, pollution, toxins, and bacteria out. It's important to use products that are pH neutral to ensure the integrity of the acid mantle is maintained. If your skin becomes too alkaline it becomes dry, sensitive and inflamed and prone to atopic skin conditions such as eczema and can be a potential psoriasis trigger. Alkaline skin will result in angry breakouts and pimples. So always look for products that clearly state that they are pH neutral. The following Botani skincare products are suited to those of you with psoriasis-prone skin.- Olive Skin Serum - for clinically proven long-lasting hydration.
- Olive Soothing Cream Cleanser - a gentle and nourishing cleanser.
- 5-in-1 PhytoBody Wash - created especially for those with highly sensitive skin such as eczema and psoriasis.
- Olivene Repair Balm - nourishing barrier balm to help repair dry and cracked areas.
- Olive Cleansing Bar - a gentle & nourishing pH neutral cleansing soap.
- Phytoseptic Natural Anti-fungal Skin Cream - to help treat cracked skin and avoid secondary infections.
Bath Salts
I'm not talking about the highly perfumed, rainbow coloured salts. I mean the REAL salts from the earth like Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) or Dead Sea salts. Add these to a warm (not hot) bath for a relaxing soak as it can help remove dry skin and reduce itching. You can also add a couple of drops of our Olive Skin Serum to help condition and hydrate the skin. When you get out of the bath, be sure to apply a nourishing moisturiser or body oil to protect the skin.
Oats
Oats are known for their ability to soothe the skin. Blitz or chop finely to create oatmeal and combine with your favourite moisturiser, body oil or warm water to create a paste and apply to affected areas. Or add blitzed oats to your bath to help reduce itchy or red skin. Keep in mind if you if are coeliac, find gluten free oats as we absorb 60 - 70% of what we put onto our skin.
Turmeric
Is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that has been used medicinally for over 4000 years for its many health benefits including to help fight colds and flu, reduce the risk of cancer, heart attacks, and strokes. Curcumin is the active constituent in turmeric and creates the anti-inflammatory effect that some people may find helpful in reducing psoriasis symptoms. You can take turmeric as a supplement pill, a drink such as herbal tea or turmeric latte (an amazing winter warmer!), or simply add to your favourite curry, roasted vegetables or even sprinkle over your morning eggs for an exotic twist!
