If you're wondering why or how you are going to switch to natural skincare when you have a bathroom full of beauty products you probably haven't even half consumed, well let me tell you that it's more than just your skin that will thank you! My brother often teases me about choosing organics. Midway through a meal, he'll facetiously ask 'is that organic?' in an attempt to poke fun at my expensive organic, raw zucchini noodles.
For those who understand the benefit of choosing produce grown without chemicals, it's a small price to pay for preventative health. Same goes for skincare. Why Switch To Natural Skincare? Here are seven reasons natural, organic ingredients are better for you:
1. Overall Health & Wellbeing
Ok guys, listen, please don't wait until you're sick with a disease or condition to start reviewing your toxic load and then switch to a healthy lifestyle. Too many people do this far too late. I'm talking about changing to organic food, organic skin care, natural household products, and using turmeric, coconut oil and apple cider vinegar as a cure-all. Ok, that last bit was a bit tongue in cheek. There's an alarming amount of data proving how common chemicals in personal care, household and gardening items may contribute to cancer, allergies and may also even disrupt hormone levels. There is no better time than now to take responsibility for the fate of your health, take preventative measures and ditch the toxic load.
2. For Your Kids & Family's Health
Is it fair to say that if you're interested in your health, then you care about the health of your family, too? Well, your beauty/personal care products are probably being opened/consumed/squirted all over the bathroom mirror by other busy little bodies (ahem, I mean family members). Think body washes, shampoos, soaps, your super expensive moisturiser that no matter how well you hid, always seems to be found by the wrong hands.
When I had my first child, I began to question and research what toxins lurked in my laundry detergent, household cleaning products, and the cosmetics I used. I didn't want to give my new baby 1,001 kisses and transfer toxic chemicals! Now with my second, he's 11 months now, here's a pic just because every product I put on my face, including lipstick, I do love a pop of colour, is 100% natural and vegan and almost edible.
3. Protects & Preserves Our Environment
Think about it this way - if you're washing your face with petroleum derivatives and harsh surfactants like SLS, where do you think that goes once you wash it down the sink? What do you think happens to microbeads? Microbeads are tiny little plastic balls found in exfoliators. They pollute our waterways and endanger our sea life. Then there's the packaging. Is it recyclable, refillable, or even biodegradable?
4. Saves Animal Lives
IF the products are also vegan and cruelty-free (which not all natural products are), you are helping to save & protect our precious animals. If you care about animals' wellbeing, you'll want to ensure every personal care product you purchase is going towards preserving their precious (many endangered) lives.
5.Your Skin Will Be Grateful
Your skin might not know it from the get-go, but just as many things in life 'catch up with us', the same can be said for the skin. Suffocating it each day with pore-clogging skincare bases that act like cling-wrap, and subjecting it to skin-thinning and sun-sensitising ingredients can lead to sensitive, prematurely aged skin. It will love you right back if you feed it with skin-loving plant oils and gentle, deeply nourishing ingredients.
6. Less Chance Of Reactions & Sensitivity Caused By Harsh Chemicals
I want to preface this by saying, just because a product is natural or organic, it doesn't mean it won't cause a reaction! There are still natural ingredients that are too harsh for the skin, including some essential oils that may smell nice in a burner but not so lovely when it's burning your skin! Even when a natural skin manufacturer has well-formulated products without any known allergens, there can still be reactions because it may be 0.1% of people are allergic to something that 99.9% of people can tolerate. Hundreds of harsh toxic chemicals sensitise skin, including peroxide derivatives, hydroxy acids, and skin lighteners such as ubiquinone. Switch to natural skincare, and you will feel the difference.
7. Superior Smells
That's usually a good enough reason for me.? But seriously, what smells better - a garden rose or a synthetic version of rose? Always the natural option. Retail products with synthetic ingredients tend to either have a chemical smell to them or are so full of nose-twitching synthetic fragrance that it's not enjoyable to wear. Just have a sniff of our Exfoliating 2-in-1 Scrub and Mask or Acai Berry Active Antioxidant Serum to 'smell' what I'm talking about.
So, why switch to natural skincare? The question is, why wouldn't you? Tell me below in the comments WHY you decided to make the switch? What was the turning point?
